How to Preserve Your Vehicle’s Leather Interior

Nothing is quite as comfortable or form fitting as a leather interior, but leather is easily damaged and requires maintenance and care to stay looking good. This is a combination of prevention and the right products to clean and maintain.

Rule Number One: Not in the Car

We live in a world of drive-thrus and convenience stores, and we can buy a dizzying array of foods and beverages for consumption on the go. Avoid it.Food and beverages mean spills and little bits of food particles finding their way into the crevices and stitches of your nice leather seats. Is that dollar menu burger such a bargain compared to the junk it represents in the recesses of your interior? You might not be able to function in morning rush hour traffic without your morning coffee and this is understood, but park the car and take the kids inside to eat. It’s safer and healthier anyway.

Rule Number Two: Wash and Condition

Remember that leather is porous and collects debris like human skin. It should be dull and not shiny in texture. When you clean it use a mild cleaner and be thorough. Your seats should feel soft when you are done. There are many manufacturers that make leather cleaner, and you can probably find a cleaner and condition combination at your local dealership. Many car owners swear by conditioners that contain lanolin oil. Follow the instructions on the bottle because every manufacturer is different. Using a clean cloth or soft scrub brush, you will wipe down the leather interior with the cleaner, then follow later with the conditioner. Sometimes, you may need to apply the conditioner twice. This one-two punch keeps the interior clean and helps protect the leather from cracking and sun damage.

Rule Number Three: Avoid the Sun

The sun is your enemy. It fades the color of the interior as well as heating it up, making the leather brittle and likely to crack. Park in the shade whenever possible, even if it means walking across the parking lot. Use a sun screen on the windshield or other product to keep the sun out. Park in a garage or car port. These simple steps can help keep the sun from ruining your car’s leather interior.

What you are looking at is ground breaking super-car concept and a preview of a genuine production car to come. If you think Honda has been laissez faire with their attempts at building Hybrid vehicles, wait to you finish reading this.

At Detroit, Honda debuted the NSX Concept which is the forerunner for the actual production car that goes on sale soon and will be built in America. While the rebirth of the Acura NSX is itself a news maker, this on is a Hybrid.

The next-generation Acura NSX will draw both more performance and efficiency by combining a high revving gasoline V6 engine mounted amid ship, but also from an electric drive unit to drive the front wheels in tandem.

Under the nose is a two electric motor drive unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system. The system can instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering. Combined with a powerful 3.5 liter VTEC engine with direct injection and dual clutch transmission driving the rear wheels, the system can put down over 400hp.

Acura anticipates what they call their new “Sport Hybrid SH-AWD” system will deliver handling performance unmatched by previous AWD systems while providing super-car acceleration and outstanding efficiency.

“This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura’s idea to create synergy between man and machine,” said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. “The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way.”

To make this car more special, it has been announced that Honda will build it in America. It will be developed and manufactured in Ohio. Although Acura is keeping most of the vehicle’s finer details under wraps, they say it will come to market within three years.

What Would The Founding Fathers Drive?

President’s Day is more than just a holiday when you can get great deals on clothing, electronics or whatever your consumerist heart desires. It’s also a day for sober reflection, a time to appreciate those men who shaped America, and to think about out what made our Founding Fathers tick. It’s also a great time to figure out what would they would drive if they were alive today. Would they buy American, or would they have been turned off by the auto-industry bailout? Would they flaunt their wealth or drive something more populist? Would they care about the inherent political message sent in the purchase of a hybrid, an electric vehicle or a ludicrously fast supercar? These are national heroes and legends, and what they would drive is clearly a matter worth discussing.

John Adams | 2012 Acura ZDX

Despite his wealth (he was a prominent Boston lawyer) and apparent worldliness (he spent the entirety of the Revolutionary War as an overseas ambassador), John Adams was about as down-to-earth as a politician can be. He spent his entire 1796 presidential campaign at home in Massachusetts and won anyway, becoming the second president of the United States. Adams would be drawn to the most pragmatic of qualities: safety. What better way to protect his own invaluable intellect and family than to stow them in Acura’s ZDX, a crossover with top-notch safety features, including a reverse sensing system and occupant sensing airbag? Samuel Adams | Upcoming Acura NSX

A legendary brewer and an infamous rabble-rouser, Samuel Adams wrote the Colonies’ first official rebuke of British taxation in 1764. His various letters and writings in the years running up to the American Revolution have led some historians to accuse him of everything from starting riots to deliberately triggering the Boston Massacre. Whatever he did or didn’t do, Adams did it to the hilt. He was also a quintessential American bad boy. Hence, he would drive the Acura NSX. Power comes from a V6 mounted behind the two occupants that sends its power to the rear wheels and is augmented by an electric motor. Acura’s SH-AWD incorporates one electric motor in a dual-clutch transmission, forming a hybrid setup. Additionally, two more motors can instantly send negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering for improved handling and efficiency. Acura claims the new all-wheel-drive system will provide super car acceleration while offering better efficiency. Adams wouldn’t necessarily take it to the track to show off — no, scratch that. Of course he would.

Benjamin Franklin | 2012 Acura TL Technology

The world’s premier Colonial-era expert on electricity was, in his time, a bit of a rock star. He toured Europe during the conflict at home, inspiring outrage and admiration. And while John Adams scribbled private invectives against Parisian debaucheries, Franklin engaged in numerous liaisons, wooing one married French woman with a nine-article “Treaty of Peace,” with its saucy stipulation that “when he is with her, he will do what he pleases.” Franklin’s dream vehicle would be a marriage of sex appeal, performance and, naturally, cutting-edge technology. In other words, he’d drive the Acura TL. It’s fast — V6 with 305hp @ 6,300RPM. And it’s gorgeous, like the best of mistresses.

Thomas Jefferson | 2012 Honda Insight

Like his longtime rival John Adams, Thomas Jefferson wasn’t known for his soldiering or his oration, but for his towering intellect and knack for crafting policy. He was the sole author of the original draft of the Declaration of Independence, and yet he delivered fiery missives against the undue expansion of federal powers. The country’s third president was also well-versed in science and was a naturalist centuries before it was en vogue. Jefferson’s choice of vehicle would reflect his quietly iconoclastic tendencies. Not content to simply own the Honda Insight, he would no doubt update a network of daily blogs on the state of various environmental policies and technologies.

James Madison | 2012 Honda Accord

America’s fourth president is a hard man to sum up. Madison was famously charmless, and his views and vices never qualified him for the kinds of caricatures that other Founding Fathers settled into. He helped write the Constitution and the Bill of Rights but insisted it was a team effort, and his two terms in the Oval Office were defined by the War of 1812. Madison’s pick would be the 2012 Honda Accord. To Washington, who initially refused an annual presidential salary, appearances mattered. Then again, he was also wealthy, and probably the toughest guy you’d ever meet in your life. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we reveal “what made the sparks fly” during the car shopping process. When asked what the leading factor was when deciding to buy a car, nearly half of shoppers cited price as the big deal breaker, according to a new survey. But, according to Auto Remarketing, practicality didn’t overwhelm the list. Many survey participants noted that finding the car of their dreams, or even lifestyle changes, most affected their choice. But following price, the car’s personality or features (horsepower, MPG, etc.) dominated 31 percent of responses. With that said, the car’s “personality” seemed more of a concern for men. Men were more likely than women (35 vs. 27 percent) to say the car’s personality or features was what made the sparks fly, officials noted. Lifestyle changes (12 percent) and finding the car of their dreams (9 percent) came next on the list. The same survey asked respondents why they “broke up” with their last car. And 37 percent said “not meeting my needs.” Next on the list was wanting a “younger model” (36 percent), while 12 percent of respondents said they just need more space.

Why 2012 Might Be the Year to Buy a New Car

Out with the old, in with the new may very well be the motto for car buyers in 2012. New research shows that used-car prices will continue to rise this year while looser lending practices coupled with incentives aimed at new-car buyers are likely to usher in an era that’s more friendly toward those looking to replace their old wheels with new ones.

The reason 2012 could be a pivotal year in car buying stems from the early days of the recession. When the economy bottomed out in 2008 and 2009, new-car sales plummeted and drivers held on to their vehicles because they were either too strapped for cash or couldn’t get loans. The shorter supply of used cars in the market caused a spike in prices, particularly for fuel-efficient models.

This used-car price increase is expected to continue throughout this year, according to new data from the National Automobile Dealers Association. The organization’s Used Car Guide predicts a 1.8 percent increase in the cost of used cars in 2012, with prices peaking in April and May.

But if it isn’t the right time to buy used, the climate should be fantastic for trade-ins, according to NADA. “For dealers, reliance on customer trade-ins will increase as they strive to meet the challenges of growing demand in a supply-constrained market,” automotive analyst Jonathan Banks said at this month’s NADA Convention and Expo in Las Vegas.

And new cars will be flying out of showrooms like they haven’t in several years, according to NADA. The organization predicts 13.9 million new cars will be sold this year — 1 million more than in 2011. This forecast is based partly on the idea that car owners will make purchases out of sheer necessity. “With the age of cars and trucks on the road today at nearly 11 years, consumers can no longer delay making a purchase of a new or newer vehicle,” said NADA chief economist Paul Taylor.

In addition, it should be a friendlier climate all around for new-car buyers, according to NADA. Taylor predicts an increase in low-interest and interest-free loans by automaker finance companies, and he says that a more diverse collection of automobiles in 2012 will also succeed in capturing buyers’ interest. Dealers will then try to keep sales rolling by offering aggressive incentives.

But what’s good news for car manufacturers isn’t music to the ears of auto mechanics and parts suppliers, who have benefited from the fact that the used cars on the roads in the U.S. today are older than ever and, hence, need more in the way of maintenance. Luckily, 2012 should be a big year for them still.

RDX and ILX Rolling Out This Spring!

Following up on its blockbuster appearance at this year’s Detroit auto show, Acura today unveiled production versions of two new vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show. A completely redesigned 2013 Acura RDX crossover sport utility vehicle and the all-new 2013 Acura ILX luxury compact sedan were shown. Both new Acura models are scheduled for launch in the Spring.

“We are excited to be launching these two new luxury models as the gateway of Acura’s revitalized product lineup,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura. “As we embark on our second 25 years as a premium luxury-performance automobile brand, we are excited about the role these two vehicles will play in welcoming a new generation of luxury car buyers to the Acura brand.”

2013 Acura ILX
The 2013 Acura ILX compact sedan is an all-new model that is positioned as the gateway into the Acura brand. The primary target customers for the new ILX are Generation Y— successful 20 and 30-somethings moving into the luxury car ranks but looking for high-value propositions in their purchases.
“First-time luxury buyers tend to place a high value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues, and that’s what we have created with the new Acura ILX,” said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. “The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market.”
Sleek and sporty, the ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency. Marking the debut of Acura’s first ever hybrid model, the ILX Hybrid makes use of a 1.5-liter inline engine and an Integrated Motor Assist® electric motor. Paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the ILX 1.5L Hybrid will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy rating of
35/38 mpg.

The ILX will feature a high-quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sporty. It will offer a number of new, high-value features including a standard Keyless Access System with smart entry and pushbutton start, along with Pandora® internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

Power and Associates’ 2011 Platinum Award for outstanding product quality, and the top award for any factory in North America.

2013 Acura RDX
The 2013 Acura RDX, the second generation of Acura’s five-passenger crossover SUV, will up the ante with a new approach to achieving both advanced performance and fuel efficiency via a new engine, transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

The 2013 RDX rides on a 4-wheel independent suspension with a MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension design. A longer wheelbase, wider track and lower center of gravity provide the foundation for the new RDX’s improved handling and ride quality. New chassis technology for 2013 includes Acura-exclusive Amplitude Reactive Dampers and a new Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering system that replaces the previous hydraulic steering. The 2013 RDX will be available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants.

Standard features for 2013 RDX include bold new 5-spoke 18-inch wheels and improved 4-wheel disc brakes that include an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Not only do the brakes provide better performance, but they also incorporate improvements to lessen brake drag for reduced rolling resistance and improved fuel economy.

Replacing the turbocharged 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder used with the previous RDX, the 2013 RDX will now have as standard equipment a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 273 horsepower— 33 more than the outgoing model.
For even higher performance and improved fuel economy, the RDX makes use of an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter. The RDX also gets a new, lighter weight all-wheel-drive system that provides outstanding performance and safety with increased efficiency to achieve higher fuel economy.

With an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy rating of 20/28 mpg, front-wheel-drive versions of the 2013 RDX are expected to offer the best fuel economy of any gasoline-powered V-6 luxury SUV in the class. All-wheel-drive models will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 19/27 mpg.

The RDX boasts a sleek and more aerodynamic body, evolving RDX from a sporty, compact SUV to a more formal SUV appearance with a longer, sculpted hood and styling that is more elegant and sophisticated to match the Acura philosophy of timeless, beautiful design.

Inside the 2013 RDX, new sweeping shapes, matte surface trim, and generous use of leather combine to give the RDX interior an upscale look and luxury feel that Acura customers have come to expect. Abundant use of sound deadening materials and Active Sound Control team to provide an exceptionally quiet cabin. Additional interior features, such as larger door openings, more passenger room, increased cargo volume and an available power rear tailgate make the RDX interior even more accommodating and flexible.

Acura NSX Won Big with Super Bowl Spot, Survey Says

Of all the cars advertised during Super Bowl XLVI, the Acura NSX sports car, which isn’t even in production yet, fetched the most attention, according to data from AutoTrader.com.

The vehicle-information company tracked consumer response to Super Bowl advertising by looking at how consumer search patterns on its site varied as the game progressed and car makers’ commercials aired. AutoTrader’s analysts were looking for “lift,” or how much of a boost in search activity each vehicle got in the hour after its ad appeared.

Searches for the Acura NSX were up 1,800%, compared with 370% for the runner-up Toyota Camry and 360% for the third-place Fiat 500. The Hyundai Veloster at 302% and Chevrolet Sonic with 275% completed the top five.

What makes a winning car spot? It’s pretty simple. Success is generally based on the ads’ creative quality, says AutoTrader chief executive Chip Perry. The ad for the Acura, which featured famous television personalities and car collectors Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, was fun to watch and “a cliffhanger,” Perry said.
